Looking Glass

Looking Glass had it start many years ago. There is nothing like wild hot springs, and my husband and I had this idea about how we could look for new ones. We poured over satellite maps of the old caldera, looked for any specs of blue on the map, and then went to the location to research. Most of the water sources turned out to be duds, but this place…. This place was absolutely magical.

I danced around the idea for this painting for quite a while, starting from 2011, but nothing seemed right.

I painted the lake in watercolor first, but I was looking for way to have a large acrylic painting that would express its concentrated magic.

Then the reflection came to mind, and this painting was born. Around that time I started playing with painting knives and heavy texture, and liked the resulting textures of the stones surrounding the water source. However, I was not happy with the overall result. So the painting stood against the wall, and kind of simmered, giving me time to reflect and think. A few months later, I have reworked the water, reflections and the sky and now it's done.

However I don’t think that I am finished with the subject, this little lake is still under my skin and I am sure it will sneak again into my paintings.
